BOW STRING HISTORY OF 60X CUSTOM STRINGS

Posted by Brad Patsy on Jan 5th 2018

While shooting local archery tournaments and bow hunting back in the mid 1990’s I was always frustrated when my fast flight bow string or cables would stretch and need to be retimed. It seemed that every time I got that bow set perfect I would have to put it back in the press and make an adjustment. Around that time some new ‘no stretch’ bow string materials like S4 and 450 were coming to market. Since I was already building my own arrows and doing all my own bow work I decided I wanted to learn how to build bow strings. I took my whole paycheck for two weeks and went to the local shop and ordered up a bow string jig, serving tool and bow string material. After a few quick lessons I was building bow strings like a madman. All of my bows soon had some sort of flashy colors at a time when everything was solid black. As time went on I would find myself up late at night after work with my jig set up in my bedroom or across my parent’s living room twisting up a set of bow string and cables for a friend, family member or local archer that was in need of new threads. Over the next 10+ years I would continue helping archers with bow strings as a little hobby while I traveled across the country shooting archery tournaments. I made several great friends along the way and even enjoyed some success shooting from time to time.

Fast forward to the winter of 2010, while on the way home from a local shoot with one of my good buddies we start talking about bow strings and all of the ‘internet’ string makers that are on the forums. After mentioning that I’ve had the thought to start building bow strings as a business in the back of my head my buddy gives me encouragement to make the move. After about a week of thinking I figured what the heck. I took $1000 and bought as much material in the popular colors as I could. Little did I know that this was the birth of 60X Custom Strings.

I decided to start advertising my services on the internet forums with hopes to sell 3-5 sets per week to help fund my archery habit. Within the first few weeks I found myself flooded with orders and my basement was transformed into a bow string shop. After working 8-10 hours at my day job I would come home and work until 2 or 3 in the morning building strings. Nine months later I walked away from a very good job that I had been at for 15 years to pursue building bow strings full time. As time went on our customer base grew larger and larger each week. It seemed that every customer would refer another customer or the installing shop would contact us to become a dealer. 60X Custom Strings was becoming more popular than I ever dreamed.

Over the next 4 years we have continued to grow. From a small cramped basement into a 3400 square foot facility, from hand winding and serving strings to designing our own layup and serving machines, we have done everything needed to keep up with production and quality standards. With specialized machines and our proprietary process we can create the best bow strings available. What was once a one man part time hobby business now provides income for 11 families producing several hundred bow string sets each week. To date 60X Custom Strings have been used to win 18 world championships and almost 100 national titles.

With the growth of our business we have had the opportunity to venture into other areas of the archery business as well. In 2013 60X Custom Strings purchased Xtreme Stabilization and continues to manufacture this line of archery target and bow hunting stabilizers as well. Several other smaller bow string companies have also been purchased and combined with the 60X name to help provide a full line of Archery Supplies.

Aside from manufacturing 60X Custom Strings made the jump into a little bit of retail. It seemed that every customer would always need little something extra when picking up their new bow string or their bow. After much debate the decision was made to add a few quality archery supply manufacturer brands for retail sale. Archery Supplies from this list of great manufacturers include Bohning, BCY, Brownell, Bowjax, Limbsaver, Scott, CBE, Pine Ridge, Lumenok, Tru Fire, Copper John, G5, Gold Tip, GWS, Nockturnal, QAD, RAD, Ripcord, and Victory.

Thank you for your business from everyone at 60X Custom Strings!
