Paper tuning a bow helps you reach the next level in the rigorous and quickly-growing sport of archery. Checking your alignment doesn’t always come naturally, especially if you’re still getting used to handling a bow. Luckily, there are things you can do to  give yourself a leg up and fine-tune your settings before you go. Here are some tips on how to paper tune a bow effectively.

What is Paper Tuning, Anyway?

Paper tuning is a skill used by  compound archers. It involves using mechanical releases to determine how straight the shot is. Through paper tuning, you can make sure your arrow rest, bowstring, and nocking point are straight and aligned. You can also determine if your form and hand position are correct. It’s easy to learn how to tune a bow with the right material — get ready to learn with us!

What Do I Need?

You need a few basic materials to get started as you learn how to paper tune a bow. First the obvious: you need a bow and some arrows. You’ll also need a paper frame, paper to shoot through, a target backstop, and a shooting range.

Get the Position

aiming at target

Position your paper so that it’s high enough for you to  shoot straight through without taking a sharp angle up or down. You’ll want to make sure the frame is sturdy enough to hold all four corners so that you can get the correct result. Put it about four to six feet from your desired target, and stand about six feet away from the paper. Then, aim and shoot.

Here are some other things to remember:

  • Check your grip and make sure it is correct
  • Work on your stance to get a smooth release
  • Look for a round hole with three or four slices

If you don’t see a round hole, fine-tune your bow until you have it. As you learn how to paper tune a bow, be patient. It might take a few tries to get this right. Shoot through the paper to try and hit your target and make setting adjustments as you need to.

Try A Kit

There are a few kits and  accessories on the market that provide a frame and paper perfect for learning how to tune a bow. You’ll want to get this right — especially if you plan to be competitive in the sport, so do your research ahead of time.
