FAQs
What does a bad bow string look like?
When performing a visual bow string inspection, look for heavy fuzzing and stretched, separated, frayed, or broken strands. Pay extra close attention to the section below the center serving and where the cables go through the cable slide. Some bows have timing marks on the cam that signify when the string is due for a replacement.

What is the lifespan of a compound bow string?
With proper care and maintenance, a bow string will typically have a lifespan of 2,000–2,500 shots. We recommend that frequent shooters replace their string and cables every two years or so.
However, this timeframe does vary depending on various factors, such as the quality of your equipment, your shooting style, where you shoot, how you maintain and store your bow, and how often you wax your string.
Can I restring my own compound bow?
Yes, you can restring your own bow, but you’ll need proper tools and a little know-how. When in doubt, have a professional install your replacement compound bow string.
If you plan to DIY, a bow press will make the job a lot easier. It holds the bow firmly in place and compresses the limbs so you can easily remove the old string and put the new one on. The EZ Green bow press from Last Chance Archery is a solid choice.

What is the best thread for a bow string?
While there isn’t a single “best” material, we frequently recommend BCY 452Xtra. It is a very popular option, especially among archers who prioritize stability.
We’re happy to help you choose the right material for your custom compound bow string based on your equipment, shooting style, and personal preferences. You can also check our bow string material guide for details about your options.
