Optimized for Traditional Archery
These bow strings are designed for optimal performance with traditional “barebow” and Olympic-style shooting. They’re different from our compound bow strings and crossbow strings, which are designed for hunting, competitions, and backyard shooting.

FAQs
What is the best string for a recurve bow?
As long as you choose a 60X bow string that fits properly, the main differentiating factor comes down to the bow string material.
Here are some of the most popular options:
- BCY X99 is our overall material of choice. It offers a winning combination of speed, stability, and reliability.
- BCY 452X is a classic material that’s famous for its exceptional stability. However, it’s prone to fuzzing.
- BCY 652 Spectra is the same as the original Fast Flight™. It’s made from Spectra, is generally reliable, and has a softer feel. Some traditional archers have transitioned to Dyneema® because it’s very similar, but typically has slightly less creep.
- BCY D97 is similar to 652, but it’s made from 100% SK75 Dyneema® instead of Spectra. It’s still a popular string for a recurve bow due to its shock-absorbing sponginess, but there are higher-performance materials.
- BCY B55 is made from Dacron, a 100% polyester material that’s popular for wooden and vintage recurves, as well as bows without reinforced tips.
- BCY 8125 is made from 100% SK75 Dyneema® like D97, but it has a thinner diameter, engineered for speed. The thinner size also makes it a versatile choice for abnormal nock sizes.

Why is stringing a recurve bow so difficult?
The outward-curved limbs harness a great deal of energy, so it can be difficult to apply adequate pressure to flex the limbs evenly and install the string for a recurve bow. We strongly recommend using a bow stringer.

Should you leave your recurve bow strung?
Wooden bows should be unstrung between uses to prevent warping. Modern bows are more forgiving and can typically be left strung.
